The TOLERANT Project
“Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world’s cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human.” UNESCO Declaration of Principles on Tolerance.
The TOLERANT project explores the digital realm to investigate the propagation of racism and xenophobia targeting (im)migrants, asylum seekers, and the Roma community within Italy.
This research initiative employs a comprehensive approach, scrutinizing both overt and covert manifestations of prejudice, while dissecting stereotypes and biases prevalent in online discourse.
Combining social science methodologies with computational linguistics techniques, TOLERANT bridges the gap between humanities and data science realms.
Key features include the development of specialized lexical resources and a multi-platform annotated corpus to enhance the detection of racist and xenophobic content.
Social Network Analysis techniques unravel the intricate web of connections between users and communities involved in disseminating harmful narratives.
Furthermore, Critical Discourse Analysis provides insight into the construction of identity and the mechanisms of discriminatory language use.
Methodologically diverse, TOLERANT employs a range of cutting-edge tools such as Item Response Theory models, Natural Language Processing, and Supervised Machine Learning algorithms.
The project benefits from a multidisciplinary team proficient in statistics, sociology, and computational linguistics, ensuring its objectives are met with rigor and insight.
